When you are switching dentists, there are a few things that you need to know. It isn’t quite as simple as cancelling your old dentist, and calling a new one to schedule. There are four things that you need to take into consideration:
It is important to do good research when you are looking for a new dentist. Your search process should be more than just browsing the web for any dentists in your area. It is important to check that the dentist you are considering has satisfied patients. Be sure to read the reviews online – both the good and bad ones! – to ensure that the dentist is doing a good job. Pay close attention to anyone who talks about the dentist’s expertise, time spent with them, and whether they’ve had billing or other issues.
When you are considering switching dentists, it is important to double check your dental insurance coverage. You need to know what you are covered for – one visit a year? two visits a year? X-rays? – and if your current dental insurance will cover your new dentist’s services. It is also important to check that your new dentist will take the insurance that you have. If not, you could end up stuck with a hefty dental bill.
This one seems like common sense, but it isn’t always. If you are moving and that is your reason behind switching dentists, it only makes sense that you will need to find a new dentist in your new location. However, if you are leaving your current dentist because you are unhappy with their services, be sure to secure a new dentist in your area before telling your old dentist you are leaving. You don’t want to be stuck without a dentist if the other ones in the area aren’t excepting new patients or have extremely long waiting lists for appointments.
When you switch dentists, your new dentist will need a copy of your dental records. This ensures they know all about your old crowns, fillings, cavities and any other conditions. You can generally request that your old dentist transfer them, but many patients forget this step. After the fact, it can be hard to track your dental records down.
